Binay to induct Pacquiao as Rotary 3810 president

MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay will induct Rep. Manny Pacquiao as Rotary Club of Manila 101 District 3810 president in the Induction and Handover ceremonies on July 24 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

The Vice President will also deliver an inspirational talk before hundreds of Rotarians together with Gov. Ismael Mercado of District 3810. Also to be inducted are the club’s new officers and board of directors.

Pacquiao will take over from Immediate Past President Liza Elorde, wife of boxing promoter/manager Johnny Elorde.

“Manny will be a great peace-builder president since it is innate in him to help other people,” said Elorde. “We believe that he will continue our projects on improving education, health and hunger, preservation of the environment, the programs for the elderly and the youth and campaign to end polio in the world.”

To spice up the event, nine boxing bouts will be held starting at 3 p.m. with the induction ceremonies set at 7 p.m. to be aired by GMA Channel 7.

Former Philippine featherweight champion Vin Vin Rufino slugs it out with Rene Bestudio in the main event for the Luzon Professional Boxing Association Championship. Other 10-round matches pit Giovanni Escaner of Sultan Kudarat against Sumeul Apuya of Bangued Abra and Glenn Suminguit of Zamboanga City versus Edwin Tumbaga of Baguio City. Two 8-rounders, one 6-rounder and three 4-rounders complete the fightcard for the “Boxing Kontra Droga” project.
