DPS grants swim scholarships to Zambo siblings

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Diliman Preparatory School, known for its innovative approaches in the field of education, has granted three more swimming scholarships to sisters from Zamboanga starting this academic year.

On recommendation of former Olympian Leroy Geoff and Philippine Swimming League president Susan Papa, DPS president and chief executive officer and former Sen. Nikki Coseteng granted scholarships to Saavedra sisters Mary Angelic, Imee and Louise, who will form the core of the DPS varsity team.

The DPS, known for its taekwondo and chess program which had produced national and international-caliber players, included swimming in its curriculum starting a year ago after the completion of its swimming center on its main campus on Commonwealth Avenue, Fairview, Quezon City.

The DPS Swimming Center, which boasts of three pools – for prep, elementary and high school – has since produced swimmers out of its student population. It also hosts swim meets and has taught out-of-school youths from Quezon City in cooperation with QC Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte as part of its summer outreach program.

The DPS has won honors in interclub and interschool swimming competitions as well as in the Palarong Pambansa and international age group swim meets at the ASEAN level.

Coseteng believes swimming improves students’ mental faculties, attested to by the academic performance of its outstanding swimmers.

In the last competitions during the PSL-DPS motivational Swimming Competition, all DPS swimmers garnered gold medals.
