MANILA, Philippines - Eric Olivarez, Jr. downed Christian San Andres, 6-0, 6-1, to cop the boys’ 18-under singles crown and complete his two-title romp in the 23rd Andrada Cup Group I tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center over the weekend.
Olivarez, 16, sustained his form for a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over top seed Calvin Canlas in the 16-and-under finals, blanking San Andres in the opener en route to the one-sided victory.
Top pick Marian Jade Capadocia, meanwhile, fended off upset-conscious Marinel Rudas with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph to pocket the 18-under singles crown in the week-long tournament backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.
Monica Therese Cruz, winner of the girls’ 12-and-under crown, and Vince Salas, who topped the boys’ 14-and-under class, matched Olivarez’s feat by teaming up with different players to rule their respective doubles events.
Cruz partnered with Nicole Amistad as they turned back Ingrid Mariz Gonzales and Erika Mae Manduriao, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), while Salas paired with Julian Dayrit in demolishing Tomas Puno and Jerome Romualdez, 6-0, 6-1.
Other winners in the event held in honor of sports commissioner and long-time tennis patron Buddy Andrada were Michael Francis Eala (10-unisex), Arthur Craig Pantino (Boys’ 12-and-under), Erika Manduriao (girls’ 14-and-under), and Katrina Orteza (girls’ 16-and-under).
