MANILA, Philippines - Davao-native Vincent Floirendo pulled an amazing sweep that firmed up his solo leadership recently in the second leg of the 2011 Yokohama Philippine GT Championship Series at the Clark International Speedway in Angeles City.
Floirendo turned back separate rivals to rule both the Sprint and the GT Main Race of this event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) and sponsored by official tires Yokohama Philippines, Enersel Forte, official pace car Honda Cars-Kalookan, Rota Wheels, and Racing Beat@Wave89.1FM.
Completing the nine-lap race in 17:27.454, Floirendo displayed near-flawless driving as he held tough down the stretch to edge Ford-TRS driver Veli-Matti Kaikkonen by just 0.999 seconds and rule the GT300 division of the Sprint Race.
Defending champion William Tan checked in third 37.813 seconds behind while Ramil Madriaga went in fourth.
Newcomer Dwight Kevin Carlos topped the GT200 class clocking 19 minutes and 17.688 seconds against runner-up Leo San Juan and Arnel Carlos; Dean Joson prevailed in the GT130 division over Sean Redpath and Efren Lavina while Marc Peter Thomann bagged the GT100 title.
The 15-lap main GT race saw Floirendo making a quick start, stepping on the gas with a fastest laptime of 2:10.183 on the third lap to gain a wide margin and finish the race in 30 minutes and 57.247 seconds.
He was way ahead as Tan checked in 1:05.965 seconds later for the runner-up honors with Madriaga and Kaikkonen winding up third and fourth.
Ford-TRS driver Alvin Ng came in fourth overall in the race to clinch the GT130 class over teammated Sean Redpath and Dean Joson; Dwight Kevin Carlos also completed a sweep in the GT200 class over Leo San Juan while Thomann prevailed anew in the GT100 division.
Sharing the limelight with Floirendo was Michael O’ Pallick who pulled a double in the Miata Cup.
O’Pallick outsmarted Allan Lavaro and Marc Ablaza in Race 1 and scored a repeat in Race 2 over Ablaza and Gian Carlo Reyes.
