Saulong, Bulilan pull off tough Toby's wins

MANILA, Philippines - Arthur Saulong and Zander Bulilan hacked out a pair of hard-earned victories to advance to the second round of the boys’ 14-under class in the Toby’s-Prince Summer Tennis Festival at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Saulong outlasted Miguel Luna in a match that was close throughout, pulling off a 5-7, 7-6(10), 18-16 squeaker to arrange a duel with Vince Salas, who dominated Felipe Mapa, 6-1, 6-0, in the next stage of the weeklong event sponsored by Toby’s Sports and Prince.

Bulilan, on the other hand, hung tough in the second set to complete a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Roberto Azores Jr. for a second round clash with Elijan Pangilinan, who bundled out Gio Chakas, 6-0, 6-3.

In other results, Vincent Anida whipped Harvee Miranda, 6-0, 6-1; Harvey Alanis beat Jabs Barcenas, 6-1, 6-2, Jan Andre Rodriguez downed Ian Aggabao, 6-1, 6-0; Rodolfo Gabaldon III defeated Dario Sujica, 6-1, 6-1; Alfonso Vilar routed William Goco, 6-0, 6-1; Jan Relatores clobbered Carl Abadilla, 6-1, 6-0; Arkaine Cordova blanked John Sanciangco, 6-0, 6-0; Mikio Shimomura ripped Joseph dela Cruz, 6-0, 6-1; and Reuben Fernandez held off Mohammad Amerol, 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Giou Pinzon scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Carlos Belludo while Paolo Villarama routed Enrique Enriquez, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the early winners in the 10-unisex side of the tournament backed by Futures Tennis Foundation, Adidas, Nike, Thermos, Equipe, Fruit Magic, SGM Bikes and Total Fitness,

In the non-ranking side of the event for beginners, Stefani Ricafort defeated Jemma Reyes, 8-2, Danica Bautista blanked Patricia Ong, 8-0, Rose Ferolino dominated Cianelle Naarro, 8-1, Cherry Quillopo beat Joyce Ferrer, 8-1, Bianca Tan downed Beatrice Torres, 8-4, and Erika Co rapped Relinette Tan, 8-0, in the 16-under category.

In 12-under boys (non-ranking) class, Ian Carpio whipped Jan Tan, 8-0, Jose San Buenaventura routed John Guanzon, 8-1, John Alano bested Jose Ricablanca, 8-1, Matthew Apostol thwarted Gabriele Gurria, 8-7(5), Hiromasa Ishikawa held off Enrico Asuncioin, 8-5, and Ryotaro Shimomura disposed off Nio Tria, 8-2.
