MANILA, Philippines - The Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) launched its Green Triathlon Advocacy to underscore its environmental support program at a recent press conference at the Philippine Columbian Association.
“We are definitely serious in becoming more actively involved in helping protect the environment, triathlon being one of the most environment-friendly sports,” said TRAP president Tom Carrasco.
He urged all triathletes to support the program launched last year by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) during the World Triathlon Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
“TRAP has already started implementing small programs beginning with the Wetshop Green Aquathlon, our first event for the year set on Jan. 16 at the Philsports in Pasig supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, “ Carrasco said.
To reduce waste production and pollution in all events through re-using and re-cycling, TRAP will do a paper-less on-line registration, do away with envelopes for race packets, segregate trash properly and arrange collection, use paper cups or recyclable plastic cups, encourage group or club registration instead of individual registration to save on resources, and make all events no-smoking places.
TRAP also announced its year-round program covering its grassroots development, which will be a nation-wide campaign with Dawal beach in Candelaria, Zambales, Mamburao in Mindoro, Bohol, and Hamilo Cove in Batangas as new venues for TRAP events in coordination with some Local Government Units (LGU’s).
