Martinez leads vets big finish

MANILA, Philippines - Tomas Martinez, Renato Sembrano and Joel Calderon finished 1-2-3 as the big guns dominated the PhilCycling National Open For Road massed start race Tuesday in Tagaytay City.

Martinez clocked four hours, 10 minutes and 19.99 seconds in ruling the Elite category of the 150-km race that started and ended at the Tagaytay City International Convention Center.

Sembrano wound up second 1:07.30 behind Martinez, while Calderon, the 2009 Padyak Pinoy champion, was third 1:12.78 further back.

PhilCycling president Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino fired the starting gun for the race that will help determine the members of the national pool to various Union Cycliste Internationale races in 2011.

Rounding out the top 10 in the Elite race were Nicanor Guanzon (1:44.29 behind), Sherwn Diamsay (3:18.93), Merculio Ramos (3:27.47), Oscar Rindole (3:37.30), Jason Garillo (3:42.96), Baler Ravina (4:38.29) and Joseph Millanes (5:01.72).

Rustom Lim clocked 3:15.44.78 in winning the Junior category also of the road race. Kenneth Solis was second 37.11 seconds behind, John Mark Camingao (7:17.25) was third, Richard Auriada (11:26.81) was fourth and Kennon Sipin (15:14.00) was fifth.

The Open resumes today with the 40-km individual time trial also starting and ending at the TCICC.
