Philrice holds fun run at UPLB

LOS BAñOS, Laguna, Philippines – A “fun run” to showcase rice, the national staple food, will be held on the campus of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) tomorrow.

Dubbed “Run 4 Ur Rice: Save Rice, Save Lives”, the race will be sponsored by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) as part of its 25th anniversary celebration.

PhilRice, currently headed by executive director Ronilo Beronio, is DA’s research arm established on Nov. 5, 1985 to develop a national rice research program; to improve the income of small rice farmers; and to expand rural employment opportunities.

Open to all age categories (who can run and want to run), the event will comprise of three-kilometer, 5-km, and 10-km running categories for men and women.

Medals and other awards will be given to the first, second, and third placers in each category. Special awards will also be given to certain participants (eldest and youngest runners, and others).

The event will be funded by PhilRice, participants (registration fees), private companies and sponsors, and related organizations.
