Hermida roaring Lion to the end

- Joey Villar -

MANILA, Philippines - Borgie Hermida put a fitting end to his career as a Red Lion with a championship to remember and cherish.

Hermida came through with a stirring performance in his last game in red and white uniform as he helped the San Beda Lions beat the San Sebastian Stags and win their 15th title via unprecedented 18-game sweep in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at the Big Dome.

On his final season, Hermida wound up with 10 points, seven boards and three assists on his final game for San Beda where studied for 16 years.

“It’s a nice way to end my service for San Beda, this is very special for me,” said Hermida, who was also named to the First Mythical Team.

Behind Hermida’s backcourt brilliance, the Lions made it to the finals five straight times and snared four championships including a three-peat feat from 1996-1999.

As a Red Cub, Hermida, who is suiting up for Barako Bull in the pros, helped retired multi-titled coach Ato Badolato’s boys to a title before deciding to finish his studies in the same school.

“It’s a good sendoff for Borgie, he deserves all this for his service to the school, we wish him luck in his future endeavors,” said Hermida’s coach, Frankie Lim.

While Hermida ended up triumphant, San Sebastian’s John Raymundo, also on his fifth and final season, was reduced to tears after he failed to steer the Stags to a back-to-back title.

Raymundo struggled and hit just two of the 11 shots he took from the field and finished with only nine points he spiked with seven assists and two caroms. Still he would leave the school secured in the thought that he played a vital role when San Sebastian reigned supreme last year.
