MANILA, Philippines - Four defending champions, including the basketball and volleyball squads of Lyceum, notched convincing victories in the 41st WNCAA tournament over the weekend.
Rookie team Poveda also shone, winning two of its three matches.
The Lyceum cagers posted their second win in as many games at the expense of Rizal Technological University, 84-29, at their homecourt.
College of St. Benilde dumped La Consolacion College Manila, 80-23, and University of Asia and the Pacific bested St. Scholastica’s College, 67-57, to tie Lyceum for the Senior A lead.
Defending junior champion Miriam College prevailed in its debut assignment against De La Salle Zobel, 69-24.
Poveda walloped St. Paul College Pasig, 42-19, and its midget team swept St. Jude Catholic School, 25-12, 25-22, in the volleyball tournmanent at the St. Scholastica gym. Miriam beat its junior squad though, 25-13, 25-5, 25-4.
Defending midget volleyball champion San Beda College Alabang, meanwhile, remained unbeaten in two starts, bagging its second triumph at the expense of St. Paul, 25-14, 25-11. St. Scholastica shared the lead after thumping Miriam, 25-6, 25-9.
Other junior basketball winners in the league being supported by official media partner Philippine Daily Inquirer, Mikasa, Molten, Sonak Sports Trading, official print partner Manila Bulletin, Lenovo, Solar Sports, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Taichi, Mojo, CEMG, Goody and MJC Press were St. Stephen’s High School over Philippine Women’s University, 56-26; San Beda against La Salle College, 48-27; and Angelicum College versus St. Jude, 69-61.
