Reyes, Gaddi eye better finish in Asian karting

MANILA, Philippines - Franco Reyes and Christian Gaddi carry the cudgels for Team Philippines in the Asian Karting Open Championships which resumes Aug. 7-8 at the Sentul Circuit in Indonesia.

The RP karters hope to dominate the last three rounds of the circuit with Reyes, of Jet Racing, and Gaddi out to improve on their ranking in their respective classes.

Reyes is third overall in the Formula 125 Open Junior class with 38 points while Gaddi is ranked fourth in the Mini-ROK class with 47 points.

Indonesian Yasuo Senna Iriawan of Red White Racing Indonesia looms as the title favorite in the Formula 125 Open Junior class where he leads with 57 points or an 18-point lead over Singapore’s Andersen Martono, who has 39.

Macau’s Andy Chang Wing Chung and Thailand’s Chatmongkon Wisutthisen follow Reyes in fourth and fifth with 34 and 31 points, respectively.

Maximillian Fewtrell of Singapore tops the Mini-ROK class with 60 points or just a one point lead over Malaysian Daim Bin Hishammudin who holds 59 points. Another Malaysian, James Wiliam Christopher Wei Pull closely trails in third with 50.

Leading the other divisions are Malaysian Gary Mumford, Benjamin Goh of Singapore, Andy Chang of Macau, Thaddeus Lee of Singapore and Cebuana Kali Carcel.

Mumford leads the Formula 125 Open Veteran with 52 points up against Alain Leeneveu of Singapore and Leung Pui Chiu of Hongkong while Goh tops the ROK Senior class with 50 points or a 10-point advantage over RP’s Yvana Carangan.

Chang holds the top spot in the Rotax Max Junior with 80 points against China’s Jun Hui Ye and Macau’s Jia Zheng Lu; Lee leads the ROK Junior class up against Cebu’s John Tristan Gullas while Carcel remains on top of the Yamaha Junior Cup with brother Tonyo Carcel with 35 points apiece.

Despite finishing only second to Indonesian Sean Gelael, Malaysian top bet Weiron Tan took the overall lead in this event organized by the Automobile General Association Macao-China, sponsored by the Red White Racing Indonesia and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Department of Tourism.

Tan now holds a total of 42 points, just a two point lead over Singapore’s Richard Bradley and Gelael who are tied in second place with 40 points apiece in the premiere Formula 125 Open Senior class.

Two other Indonesians - Andi Aviandha Triadna Jakile and Christian Silvano - follow with 27 and 25 points respectively while another Malaysian ace Ryan Mumford is in sixth with 20.

Top Filipino karters - Juha Turalba of Ready2Race, Vencer John Suba of FERN-C Racing, Stefano Marcelo of Maranello-San Miguel Corporation-Marcelo Racing and reigning Karter of the Year Joey Orduna - didn’t join the Macau leg as they slipped to ninth to 12th places accordingly.
