PKA eyes regional kayaking circuit

MANILA, Philippines - A group of recreational kayakers from Singapore has confirmed its participation in the two-day Canon Powershot Kayak Explore Anvaya Cove-Subic Bay Kayak Marathon set this weekend in what will serve as the pilot event for a bigger regional kayaking circuit starting next year.

This was announced by event organizer Val Camara, president of the Philippine Kayaking Association, at the PSA Forum yesterday, citing Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia as confirmed participants in 2011, with possibly Cambodia, Thailand and Laos as the other prospective countries.

“We are excited about the development of recreational kayaking in our country, after all, we are an archipelago of more than 7000 islands and is the perfect place for kayaking, something that the Department of Tourism has recognized as a major adventure sports program, and this regional circuit which we have discussed with Singaporean Cher Huey and Al Gaan from Indonesia in our last visit to Singapore will certainly boost kayaking in the whole region, “ said Camara.

The event is also held as part of the PKA program to promote tourism in the Philippines while developing the country as an ideal spot for the sport.

“Our aim is to promote certain areas in our country as ideal kayaking destinations as we help develop the area for tourism,” said Camara.

Events on tap are the 25K kayaking marathon for skilled kayakers, a 5K race for beginners and Eco-Touring for leisurely paddling.

The event is also supported by the DOT, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), the Clark Development Corporation ( CDC ), R.O.X., David’s Salon, Mojo sandals, Red Bull, and Cebu Pacific. – With report from Kristina Villanueva
