ASAP swimmer shines in Palarong Pambansa

MANILA, Philippines - Gian Berino of the Aquatic Sports Association of the Philippines (ASAP) bagged four gold and three silver medals at the forefront of National Capital Region’s mighty finish in the just-concluded Palarong Pambansa at the Tarlac Recreational Park recently.

Berino won the gold in the 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 400m medley relay, 400m freestyle relay and took the silver medal in the 400m, 800m and 100m freestyle events.

Berino won the most number of golds and number of points for secondary boys.

Berino is a member of the Joey Andaya swimming team and is coached by Joey Andaya.

ASAP president Atty. Luz Arzaga Mendoza and secretary general Susan Papa, both former national swimmers, said ASAP will give recognition to Berino for his excellent performance.

“We are proud of him. Despite the lack of a permanent training venue, Gian had outraced the TRACE Aquatics swimmers who are training in a state-of-the-art pool with the nationals,” said Papa.

Berino was University of Santo Tomas athlete of the year in 2010 in the high school division.

Aside from training swimmers for collegiate competitions, ASAP has broadened its training program to include young swimmers at the grassroots level.
