MANILA, Philippines - Veteran internationalist Rodolfo Luat used his experience to stop Elmer Haya and fashion out an 11-9 victory in the Manny Villar Cup at the SM City last Sunday in Iloilo City.
Luat held his own on the break then pounced on Haya’s errors to post the victory and become the second repeat champion in the circuit presented by Sen. Manny Villar’s Villards: Tulong sa Pagsulong ng Philippine Sports and sponsored by Camella Communities.
The 51-year-old Luat, who also ruled the Bacolod leg last year, won P300,000 and matched Roberto Gomez’s two title feat in the series. Gomez won in Davao in August 2008 and Isabela last April.
“I’m very happy for this win. This proved that I can compete at the highest level despite my age,” said Luat, also set to play in this year’s SEA Games in Laos.
Haya, who upset former world no. 1 Dennis Orcollo, Cebu leg titlist Gandy Valle and Warren Kiamco, settled for runner-up honors.
“He (Haya) is a very good player and I think my experience made the difference,” said Luat. “I won’t be surprised if one day he will win this or other big tournaments.”
Luat opened his campaign by defeating Joey Pardales, then followed it up with victories over Efren “Bata” Reyes, Ronnie Alcano, and defending champion Lee Van Corteza.
