Carlos scores 11-shot win in Jakarta jungolf crown

MANILA, Philippines - Jobim Carlos posted a runaway 11-shot romp over local bet Nurdana despite a closing four-over par 76 and powered the ICTSI-RP squad to team victory in the Medco Jakarta Junior Open at the Jagorawi Golf Club in Indonesia over the weekend.

Seizing the lead for good with a solid one-under par 71 in the third round, Carlos cruised to victory despite a bogey-riddled round as his pursuers likewise faltered under tough playing conditions at the ravine-laced par-72 layout.

The bespectacled Carlos finished the four-day championship with a 293, ruling the 15-17 group by 11 strokes over Nurdana, who had a 79-304 while American Ian Andrew wound up third with a 305 after a 74.

Alex Nallos and Vincent Salvador, also of ICTSI, placed seventh and 10th with 78-313 and 79-320, respectively, while Bino dela Paz carded a 75 and wound up fourth with a 325 in the 13-14 category topped by Jordan Irawan of Indonesia with an 80-318.

The 16-year-old Carlos, the Jungolf Navy leg winner recently, and De la Paz later teamed up to pool a 618 aggregate and capture the team championship via a whopping 21-shot win over Tenee Golf Club of Indonesia, which had a 639.

Carlos, a Junior World qualifier last year who also won the 2008 O’Donnel Junior Championship, and the ICTSI team’s victory came on the heels of teammate Cyna Rodriguez’s two-stroke victory over Elena Warren of the US in the Trans America Junior Golf Championships at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, Texas Friday.

Over in Pennsylvania, Rufino Bayron recovered with a two-under par 70 but stood too far away with an eight-over 224 aggregate after three rounds in the Sunnehanna Amateur Open at the Sunnehanna Golf Club in Johnston Saturday.

Hobbled by an opening 80, Bayron improved with a second round 74 before finding his rhythm on the third day with four birdies against two bogeys although he hardly moved up to joint 46th place and remained 18 shots off Kevin Foley, who totaled a 10-under 206 after a 73.
