MANILA, Philippines - Palitada King and Old School Football Club posted back-to-back opening day victories to lead the men’s division of the 2009 Republic Cup that opened last weekend at the Manila Polo Club while Archers 1 and Archers 2 likewise won both their inaugural games to take the top spot in the women’s division.
In its first game, Palitada King blanked Urdaneta Kickers 3 - 0, and followed it with an equally impressive similar 3 - 0 win over Salcedo Football Club while Old School FC edged out defending champions Titans 2 - 0 and beat Superfriends 3 - 0 to keep pace with Palitada King.
Loyola Vets and Salcedo both split their games, Loyola defeating Urdaneta 4 - 3 but bowing down to Salcedo 1 - 2 with the latter losing in turn to Palitada King, Loyola Agila nipped Titans FC, 2 - 0 and drew its game with Superfriends 0 - 0.
At the bottom with their two losses each are Urdaneta and Titans FC.
In the women’s side of the tournament sponsored Globe, Asia brewery, Coke, McDonalds, Balls TV, Planet Sports (Lotto), PLDT, Universal Robina, Jim beam, Monde Nissin, and Met Tathione, Archers 1 blanked UP-Women’s 3 - 0 in their first meeting, and repeated it by a 2 - 1 win in a rematch, the Archers 2 team meanwhile beat Futboleras 4 - 1 and the MPL All Stars 2 - 0 to lead the distaff side.
The tournament is organized by Pureplay, Creative Carnival, and the Titans Football Club.
