TCC nears record sweep in Fil-Am

BAGUIO – The Country Club sustained its fine form and dominated the field with another solid round in the Fil and Am divisions yesterday, threatening to record a sweep of both sides in the Fil-Am Golf invitational tournament on its very first try.

Antonio Asistio fired 40 Stableford points at the Camp John Hay Club, four-under 65 in stroke play, to lead The Country Club’s 150-point output for a whopping 57-point lead over Eastridge halfway through the centerpiece Fil Championship flight event.

Reigning national champion Ferdie Aunzo shot a two-under 67 worth 38 points, the same score turned in by Rufino Bayron while Dante Becierra chipped in 34 points for that 150 and a 297 aggregate.

So solid was TCC’s performance that Anthony Fernando’s 33, which could power a team in the five-to-play, four-to-count format event, failed to count.

Eastridge, which trailed the ICTSI-backed TCC by 32 points in the first round, scored 125 for a 240 total with Korean Jing Soo Park matching Asistio’s tournament-best 40 points.

Mizuno remained in far third with 223 points after a 114 while Sherwood Hills stood two points adrift at 221 after a 121.

Brent Sumampong, playing on his second year with ICTSI, had a one over 62 at the nearby Baguio Country Club for 35 points as TCC put up a 125 for a 248 and an eight-point lead over Manila Southwoods in the Am side of the tournament.

The Carmona-based squad scored a 124 for a 240.

Sumampong, 18, gunned down three birdies against four bogeys for his 35-point production.

The Country Club also drew 31 from Art Arbole and 30 points from Peter Villaber, while Joey Huelar and Sonny Villaber made 29 apiece, one of which didn’t count.

Jikjik Abdon paced Southwoods with 33 points while Wolen Superal had 32, Erwin Vinluan scored 31 and Chepe Dulay or Tristan Tabanas counted with a 28.

“It’s a man-to-man game tomorrow (today),” said Vinluan. “We have to take some risk to cut their lead.”

Meanwhile, host Camp John Hay Golf Club I gained a share of the lead with Forest Hills Nicklaus and Golden Oats in Flight A Fil Division a two-day total of 241 points after a 132.

Seng Min Koh made 38 points, Shean Bedi had 34 while Goody Ignacio and Monet Garcia chipped in 33 and 27 points, respectively, for CJH team.

First-day leader Forest Hill Nicklaus scored 116 points while Golden Oats had 117.

Camp Aguinaldo stood two points behind with 239 after a 125.
