Manager sees David defying odds

-

LAS VEGAS – David Diaz’ manager Jim Strickland not only sees a close fight but also a big win for his boxer.

“As I said before I see a 12-round fight and it’s my thought and my hope that David’s going to win this fight,” he said Friday on his way back up to Diaz’ hotel suite.

Strickland, now 78, said the odds, which make Manny Pacquiao the overwhelming favorite, may be the opposite of what fans may see on the ring.

“I think it’s going to be nip-and-tuck and a much closer fight. I don’t think the odds speak for what David is able to do. I think it’s a close fight and it will go down to the wire.”

During the weigh-in he said he was satisfied with what he saw in Diaz, and noticed that Pacquiao is in great condition as well.

Strickland said that before the weigh-in they hear rumors that Pacquiao was having difficulty making 135 lbs. But he just ignored them.

“We heard, too, that Pacquiao may be taking my boy for granted by not training as hard but I believe that every time he fights he’s ready to fight. He’s a professional,” Strickland said.

“I just saw a well-conditioned athlete like David. So we will come out ready to fight and if there’s an opportunity we’ll drive through it,” he added. – Abac Cordero
