Mayhem? Tame match? It’s up to Diaz – Pacman
LOS ANGELES – Manny Pacquiao said it’s up to David Diaz how he wants this fight to end.
The Filipino boxing sensation making his debut in the lightweight division said Diaz, the reigning champion, can either slug it out with the Filipino or turn it into a chess match.
Pacquiao said Thursday, an hour after he wrapped up his training at the Wild Card Gym, he’s hoping that his June 28 showdown with Diaz won’t end up the way his last two fights against Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez did.
Pacquiao beat Barrera and Marquez via decision when everyone else thought he’d win, at least, inside the distance.
“It just so happened that my last opponents didn’t really want to exchange punches. What can I do? I just can’t go after them and risk getting hit myself,” said Pacquiao.
He said it was Erik Morales, the great Mexican fighter, who gave him a real good fight inside the last couple of years.
“My other fights, like those with Morales, were nice because he fights and he trades punches. Yan ang bakbakan (That’s the type of brawl),” he said, of course without mentioning he won two of their last three fights by knockout.
Against Diaz, Pacquiao said nothing is certain.
“We don’t know what will happen. If he won’t make a move, I will make my move,” he said as he trooped inside his favorite Thai restaurant just outside the Wild Card Gym.
Pacquiao said with just nine days before the fight he was at 139 lbs, just four pounds off the lightweight limit of 135 lbs. He said he intends to keep the weight intact before he drives to
Losing four pounds once he gets to Vegas, or five days before the fight shouldn’t be a problem for Pacquiao, who added that he intends to show up at the official weigh-in, on the eve of the fight at 134 lbs.
Then, he said he’d climb the ring at 144 lbs, and not actually 146 as reported when he met Marquez up on the ring of
“I was weighed before the fight with everything on. I had everything on – my jogging pants, my sandals, my jacket, my wallet, my watch. This time I’d climbing the ring at around 144. I’m okay now,” he said.
