Herrera rules Condura run

-

Cresenciano Sabal may be the king of Philippine marathon but the 10K race is Rene Herrera’s forte.

Herrera, one of the country’s top middle-distance runners, ran a calculated race to beat Sabal yesterday and rule the first Condura Race For Tubbataha at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Sabal, on the other hand, was outsmarted by Juniel Languido down the wire to steal the runner-up honors from the reigning Milo Marathon 42K champion.

Herrera, Sabal and Languido actually took turns in pacing yesterday’s 10K advocacy run. With about a kilometer left in the race, Herrera pulled away from the two. Sabal tried to reclaim the lead but Herrera was clearly the better sprinter.

Sabal, however, slowed down approaching the finish line, giving Languido the opportunity to sneak past him and beat him by a split of a second.

Herrera, who won the gold in 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 24th Southeast Asian Games, clocked 31 minutes, 3 seconds,  seven seconds ahead of Sabal and Languido.

The distaff side was ruled by Mercedita Manipol-Fetalvero, the country’s undisputed 10K queen.

She finished the race in 35:45, her best 10K mark this year. This early in the 2008 running season, Fetalvero already has seven titles, including two 21K races.

Second was Maricel Maquilan in 38:30. Ailene Tolentino was third in 39:26.

Raul Anthony Concepcion, president and COO of Concepcion Durables, Inc., fired the starting gun, flagging off the more than 1,800 runners.

Proceeds of this advocacy race will go to the rehabilitation fund for the Tubbataha reefs in Palawan.
