UAAP women’s champion University of Santo Tomas crushed St Benilde, 90-70, while University of the Philippines subdued University of the East, 65-57, to clinch semifinal berths in the 2007 Nike Summer League basketball tournament at the FEU gym in R. Papa, Manila.
The Tigresses leaned on the troika of Marichu Bacaro, Dominique Leonardo and Remia Buenacosa in demolishing the Lady Blazers, while the Lady Maroons of coach Eric Castro relied on File Cainglet to frustrate the Amazons in this prestigious tournament organized by Nike and ABS-CBN and sponsored by Gatorade.
Bacaro topscored with 28 points for the Tigresses.
Leonardo had 16 and Buenacosa added 14 for the España-based school squad,which will now face UAAP arch-rival Far Eastern University in the cross-over semifinals on June 2.
The Lady Maroons will battle College and University Sports Asssociation (CUSA) champion Philippine College of Criminology in the cross-over semifinals.
Rossan Marzan topscored with 19 points for the Amazons.
In the other games, FEU nipped Adamson University, 60-48, and PCCr downed Philippine Maritime Institute, 73-61, to secure the other two semifinals spots.
The Lady Tamaraws of coach Michael Oliver got 45 points from Chovi Borja, Aurora Adriano, Bernadette Mercado and Kat Reyes to nip the Lady Falcons.
Borja topscored with 13 points, Adriano and Mercado with 11 points each and Reyes had 10 and 14 rebounds for the Lady Tamaraws.
The Lady Tamaraws will seek a revenge when they collide with the Tigresses in the semifinals.
Kat Sandel paced the Lady Falcons with 18 points.
The Lady Enforcers drew big games from Stineli Casakit and two other players in downing CUSA rivals Lady Admirals to join the three UAAP teams in the next round.
Casakit fired 23 points for the Lady Enforcers, followed by Katrina Garcia and Grace Quemada with 14 points apiece.
Janice De Guzman and Jacquelyn Suarez led the Lady Admirals with 13 and 12 points.
