Lady Archers smash way to 6th win

-
La Salle stretched its win run to six while dealing Lyceum its sixth straight setback to remain on top of the heap at the start of the second round in the 2005 Shakey’s V-League first conference at the Rizal Coliseum.

Everything the Lady Archers did in beating the Lady Pirates in the first round they did again yesterday, sweeping their rivals in one hour and nine minutes, 25-18, 25-21, 25-17, and firming up their lead in the event which they ruled in the 2004 second conference.

University of Santo Tomas, which launched its title-retention bid on a rather shaky note with three losses against two wins in the first round, likewise scored a straight-set victory, dominating Far Eastern U, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21, to even its card to 3-3.

Kate Co Yu Kang, Mary Jean Balse and Venus Bernal combined for 44 points as the Tigresses imposed their will on the net where they outscored their foes, 42-29, while blocking 10 of FEU’s attempts.

Highlights of the matches will be shown on IBC 13 tonight starting at 7 p.m.

Maureen Penetrante penetrated Lyceum’s defense with potent spikes, which the Lady Pirates either failed to stop or return, netting 13 points while scoring one off the block for a 14-point performance.

Michelle Carolino, atoning for her lackluster performance in La Salle’s 25-16, 25-20, 25-23 rout of Lyceum in the first round of this event sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza, churned out a 13-point job this time with the last conference’s MVP scoring 12 of them on attacks.

The hardluck Lady Pirates actually put up a whale of a fight in the early going of each set but just couldn’t keep in pace with the Lady Archers torrid game midway and reeled to their sixth loss in row in the tournament organized by Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. and backed Accel, Mikasa, IBC 13 and Jemah Television.
