Cojuangco names key POC officials

The heads of the different working committees within the Philippine Olympic Committee have been named by newly-installed POC president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco.

Athletics chief Go Teng Kok, Cojuangco’s biggest supporter during the recent POC elections, heads the powerful ways and means committee with Immigration Commissioner Al Fernandez as his vice.

Fernandez is chairman of the track and field association under GTK.

Other key positions went to cycling’s Bert Lina (arbitration), judo’s Rey Jaylo (ethics), Harry Angping (technical), Rep. Monico Puentevella (membership) and Cynthia Carrion (women in sports).

Steve Hontiveros of bowling was officially named by Cojuangco as his secretary-general while Col. Buddy Andrada of tennis will serve as deputy sec-gen.

Cojuangco ran for president unopposed after Celso Dayrit of fencing decided not to seek a second term. Dayrit’s four-year term officially ends Dec. 30 with the new set of officers being sworn in in January.

"Anybody who’s willing to give his or her share will be given specific assignments. This is not going to be a one-man show," Cojuangco, the equestrian chief, said after the Nov. 26 elections.

Other committee heads are Atty. Ding Tanjuatco (Constitution and By-Laws), Joaquin Tagle of billiards (corporate communications), Jamalul Sultan Kiram III of pencak silat (cultural), Vic Valbuena of table tennis (fellowship), Dr. Raul Canlas (medical), Graham Lim of basketball (referees and judges), Dr. Sim Chi Tat of canoeing (sports and environment) and Red Dumuk of triathlon (sports for all).
