Romualdez: Footbelles good for SEAG gold

It’s not wistful thinking on the part of new Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Johnny Romualdez who believes the country’s women’s team has significant chance of winning the gold in the Southeast Asian Games.

For a nation not as fanatic as others are to a sport considered as the most popular in the world, Romualdez’s stance may be subject to a debate.

But the former football player appears ready to put everything on the line just to prove his point.

"We’re not dreaming. Our women’s team is capable of winning the gold (in the SEA Games)," said Romualdez in his first PSA Forum appearance at the Manila Pavilion since taking over the PFF post from Rene Adad late last year.

Based on its impressive showing in a tournament prior to the SEA Games, the women’s team was fancied to bag at least a bronze medal during the Vietnam edition of the biennial meet last December.

But it failed to live up to expectations as it came one goal short from making the semifinals.

Still, that didn’t dampen Romualdez’s spirit.

"Sa babae kasi hindi masyadong matindi ang kalaban unlike sa men’s team," Romualdez added in the same forum sponsored by Agfa Colors and Red Bull.
