More than 5,000 athletes and coaches from 11 countries, including East Timor, are taking part in the 22nd staging of the regional mini-Olympics and Hanoi is determined to put on a spectacle to dazzle its neighbors.
"For Vietnam, the Southeast Asian Games constitutes not only a sporting event but also a political, cultural and social event. They are extremely important for the region," said Le Anh Tho, a member of the organizing committee.
Fittingly then, and in line with the communist nations passion for slogans, it has bestowed upon the Games, which run until December 13, the motto "Solidarity, Cooperation for Peace and Development".
According to official figures, Vietnam has spent $350 million in preparation for its turn in the spotlight, including building 36 stadiums, arenas and training centers, and upgrading old facilities.
"The organizing committee of the host country has been doing its best to secure a successful Southeast Asian Games," Sports Minister and committee head Nguyen Danh Thai said last week.
Thousands of colored flags and banners have been hung throughout the 11 provinces and cities hosting events, while Hanoi residents have been urged to fly the red and gold starred national flag outside their houses. (AFP)
