Greenhills 1 reigned supreme again in the Nokia Intervillage east tournament, putting together 292 points under the Stableford scoring system and towing two other teams into the grand finals of the annual event at the Palmer course of The Orchard in Cavite Monday.
Ric Bernabe, Arthur Reyes and Pete Lavarro showed the way again for the fancied team just as they did in the first round, scoring identical 38 points each to anchor the teams expected romp in the event exclusively for villages in San Juan, Pasig and Marikina.
Counting their first round score of 297, the Greenhills 1 golfers closed out with a 589 aggregate, a whopping 15-point victory over Casa Verde, which formalized its first-ever stint in the grand finals of this event sponsored by Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications, by pooling a 291-point output for a 36-hole total of 574.
In an explosive show of scoring might, the Casa Verde squad got five 38s from Alex Revilla, Alfredo Nasser, Vicente Revilla, Peter Unlay and Edwin Hernandez as it finally succeeded to advance to the finals after a slew of failed bids in the past stagings of this event backed by Alaxan, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Pisanti golf wear, 357 Boracay, Kaiseki Japanese Cuisine and BJ Marthel International.
Loyola Grand Villas also hogged the spotlight under overcast skies as it dislodged Greenhills 2 for the third and last spot with a scintillating final round performance from a brave bunch of shotmakers.
Fielding only eight players in the 12-to-play, eight-to-count format event, Loyola Grand Villas drew the needed points from its entire crew and snatched the last berth with a 281 and a 547, nipping Greenhills 2 by just one point. Mon David, Alex Vega, Jr. and Danny Alcoseba each had 38 points; Alison Vega and Ome Candazo fired identical 36 points, while Boy Atienza, skipper Jaime Tanjangco and Dina Poblador tossed in 34, 32 and 29 points, respectively.
The Greenhills 2 golfers, who placed third in the first round, struggled with a 264 and wound up fourth with a 546.
Meanwhile, Valle Verde 3s Ronnie Littaua (Group 1) led the winners in the individual competition, who included Ferdie Atendido, also of Valle Verde 3 (Group 2), Hubert Lim of Valle Verde 4 (Group 3), Alfredo Nasser of Casa Verde (Group 4), and Alex Revilla, also Casa Verde (Group 5).
