Cerbito, Marohom top Shell chessfest

Entries from Dasmariñas, Cavite used their hometown advantage to clinch the 20-under and 14-under titles in the Cavite leg of the 2001 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships at the F. Barzaga Memorial School recently.

Deleon Marohom, Jr., a computer science student at PCU-Dasmariñas, finished with seven points to clinch the 20-under crown, a P5,000 purse and a ticket to the national finals in Manila this November. Nazario Ubanan was second with six points and took home P4,000.

Mark Daniel Cerbito, studying at the Dasmariñas National High School, ruled the 14-under division with 6.5 points and won P4,000 aside from a slot to the national finals. Finishing second with six points was Karl Victor Ochoa of Calumpit, Bulacan. He settled for the P3,000 runner-up purse.

The next leg is set Sept. 29 to 30 at the Bulwagang Batangan of the Batangas City Capitol. Helping Shell put up the chessfest are PLDT, Negros Navigation, Solid Shipping Lines Corp., College Assurance Plan and the Shell-Citibank MasterCard.
