MANILA, Philippines - Umaasa si basketball legend at dating Sen. Robert Jaworski na makakapagpakita ng maganda ang Gilas Pilipinas at makakakuha ng respeto mula sa kanilang mga kalaban sa pagsabak sa FIBA World Cup sa Spain.
“They’ve found themselves in a real tough group. But basketball is a game of opportunity, and the important thing is for them to represent the country well and have their contribution to the sport,†wika ni Jaworski, pinanood ang Game 6 sa pagitan ng Barangay Ginebra at San Mig Coffee noong Lunes sa Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“For me, it’s better to be in that group, and you have the opportunity to make surprises. It’s better than you’re in a weak group then you’re beaten there,†dagdag pa ni Jaworski.
Ayon pa sa ‘Living Legend’, ang playing attitude ng koponan ang magiging mahalaga sa huli.
“You’ll find there an elbow as big as this (tinuro ang kanyang tuhod). Eh baka dalawang untog lang stretcher ka na, that’s not the way to compete,†ani Jaworski na naglaro sa Asian Games, ABC (FIBA Asia) Championship, Universiade, World Championships at sa Olympics.
“We had competed with some of the best in the world, and I think we had our contribution to this great sport,†sabi pa ng dating Ginebra mentor.
Sa pagsabak naman ng Gilas Pilipinas sa 2014 Asian Games sa Incheon, Korea, sinabi ni Jaworski na hindi na dapat humanap pa ng motivation ang Nationals.
“Di ba seventh tayo sa Southeast Asian Games? Ang sarap maging No. 1 sa Asia in this coming Asian Games,†wika ni Jaworski.
Sumabak na siya sa Asiad bilang isang player at isang coach. Noong 1990 sa Beijing, iginiya ni Jaworski sa isang silver-medal finish ang unang all pro team na binuo para lumahok sa international meet.
Wala pang Phl team sa anumang Asian competition ang nakadaig sa ginawa ng tropa ni Jaworski hanggang sumegunda ang Gilas Pilipinas sa Iran sa 2013 FIBA Asia Championship sa Mall of Asia Arena sa Pasay City.
