BUDAPEST, Hungary — Gold medal at best finish sa kasaysayan ng paglahok ng Pilipinas sa FIDE Chess Olympiad.

Inangkin ng mga Pinay woodpushers ang ginto sa Group B sa women’s section ng 45th Olympiad matapos magsulong ng pa­­nalo sina Shania Mendoza, Janelle Mae Frayna, Jo­dilyn Fronda at Ruelle Ca­nino laban sa Brazil, 4-0, sa 11th at final round dito sa BOK Sports Hall.

Tumabla ang tropa sa 22nd place kasama ang 14 pang bansa na may tig-14 match points.

Ngunit pumuwesto sa 24th overall matapos makuwenta ang mga tiebreaks.

Sa pagsalang sa 11-round tournament ay No. 47 ang Philippine na­tio­nal women’s squad.

Ito ang unang gold me­­dal ng bansa matapos bu­mandera sina Sheerie Joy Lomibao, Catherine Pereña, Sherily Cua at Beverly Mendoza sa Group C noong 2006 Turin edition.

Ito rin ang best finish ng Pinas sapul nang tumapos sina Girme Fontanilla, Mila Emperado at Ma. Cristina Santos Fidaer sa 22nd place noong 1988 edition sa Thessaloniki, Greece.

“It will be a legacy in Phi­lippine chess that will be remembered for a long time,” ani national women’s team coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales na nag­pa­salamat din sa suporta ng Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) at ni NCFP president Butch Pichay.
