Wrestling gustong iangat ni Aguilar

MANILA, Philippines — Desidido ang Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) na muling paangatin ang Pilipinas sa mundo ng wrestling partikular na sa mga international competitions gaya ng prestihiyosong Olympic Games.

Kaya naman handa si WAP president Alvin Aguilar na magtaguyod ng iba’t ibang local at international tournaments upang makadiskubre ng mga atletang huhubugin at isasabak sa mga world-class events.

Optimistiko si Aguilar na malaki ang tsansa ng Pilipinas na makapasok sa Tokyo Olympics dahil tiwala ito sa kakayahan at abilidad ng mga Pinoy wrestlers.

“We are very confident that we have the talents to make it all the way to the Tokyo Olympics,” wika ni Aguilar sa pagbisita nito sa Usapang Sports ng Tabloids Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) sa National Press Club sa Intramuros, Manila.

Huling nasilayan sa aksiyon ang Pilipinas sa wrest­ling competitions ng Olympic Games noong 1988 sa Seoul, South Korea kung saan sumabak si Florante Tirante sa men’s Greco roman at men’s freestyle events sa –52 kg. division habang nasilayan naman sa aksiyon si Dean Manibog sa men’s freestyle (-60 kg.).

 “It’s about time we have another Filipino wrestler in the Olympics. If I remember it right, the last time nagkaroon tayo ng Filipino wrestler sa Olympics was in the 1980s pa,” dagdag ni Aguilar.

Itataguyod ng WAP ang apat na events sa taong ito – ang Nationals 2020 sa Marso 7 hanggang 8; ang 1st Asian Grappling Championships sa Abril 2 hanggang 5; ang Asian Championships Under-23 sa Hulyo; at ang Southeast Asia Championships sa Nobyembre.
