Tsansa ni Torres na makalundag sa Olympic Games lumalakas

MANILA, Philippines – Malaki ang tsansa ni dating Southeast Asian Games long jump champion Marestella Torres na muling makapaglaro sa Olympic Games na gaganapin sa susunod na taon sa Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Sinabi ni Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) President Philip Ella Juico na posibleng si Torres ang maging kinatawan ng bansa sa athletics competition ng quadrennial meet sa pamamagitan ng universa­lity place sakaling hindi nito maabot ang qualifying mark na 6.70 metro.

Binibigyan ng universa­lity place - isang babae at isang lalaki - ang mga bansang walang nagkwalipika sa alinmang Olympic qualifying tournament na may basbas ng international federation.

Nauna nang nakakuha ng tiket sa Rio Olympics si Filipino-American Eric Cray nang magtala ito ng 49.12 segundo sa 400-meter hurdles kung saan ang qualifying standards ay 42.40.

Dahil sa awtomatikong silya ni Cray, isang babaeng atleta na lamang ang kinakailangang matukoy ng PATAFA para sa Rio Games.

“We’ll probably nominate her for universality place because we already have a qualified male athlete. But if she meets the standard, then that’s better,” wika ni Juico na dating chairman ng Philippine Sports Commission.

Lalahukan ng Pinoy tracksters ang ilang quali­fying tournaments ang nakalinya sa susunod na taon kabilang na ang 13th Asian Cross Country Championships sa Manama, Bahrain at Asian Indoor Championships sa Doha, Qatar.

Kasama ni Torres sa kampanya sina pole-vaul­ter Ernest John Obiena, Melvin Guarte, Edgardo Alejan at Christopher Ulboc.

Si Obiena ay kasalu­kuyang nagsasanay sa Poland habang sina Guarte, Alejan at Ulboc ay nakatakdang magsanay sa Australia.

“Everything’s geared for the Olympics. If they fail to make it to Rio, they’ll be good for the SEA Games in 2017, the Asian Games in 2018, the 2019 SEA Games and the 2020 Olympics. It’s a long-range plan,” dagdag ni Juico.
