MANILA, Philippines - Babae ang dapat na sumunod na presidente ng bansa, ayon kay SeÂnator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.
Sa talumpati ni Santiago sa selebrasyon ng International Women’s Month sa International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) sa Los Baños, Laguna, sinabi nito na upang matiyak ang laÂyunin ng United Nations Millennium Development Goals of gender equality, ang susunod na presidente ng bansa ay dapat maging babae.
Ayon kay Santiago nagkaroon na ng 15 presidente ang Pilipinas kung saan 13 ang lalaki at dalawa pa lamang ang babae.
“We should have a female president in 2016. Research shows that when women are emÂpowered as political leaders, countries often experience higher standards of living with positive developments in education, infrastructure, and health care,†ani Santiago.
Iginiit rin ni Santiago na dapat mahalal ang anim na babaeng senador sa 2016 elections para magkaroon ng gender equality sa Senado sa susunod na Kongreso.
Nainiwala si Santiago na malaki pa rin ang “gender gap†sa mga public office kung ang pag-uusapan ay gender equality.
“Numerically, half of our high government officials should be women, and half should be men. And yet the division between the sexes is highly disproportionate in favor of men. In the PhilipÂpine Senate, in the 16th Congress, of 24 senators, only six of us are women,†ani Santiago.
Nauna rito, iginiit ni Santiago na hindi dapat mahalal sa 2016 ang mga pulitikong nasasangkot sa pork barrel fund scam.
