PSC chief idinepensa ang kanilang gold medal projection

MANILA, Philippines - Ipinagtanggol kahapon ni Philippine Sports Commis­sion (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia ang kanilang naunang medal projection na kokolekta ang mga national athletes ng 70 gintong medalya sa 26th Southeast Asian Games sa Indonesia.

Sa isang radio interview, sinabi ni Garcia na ang ka­nilang gold medal projection ay nagmula sa isang pag-aaral sa ukol sa rekord ng mga atleta.

“We made a study, came up with projected gold me­da­lists based on records,” ani Garcia. “But there are those which fell short, like the women’s basketball team who lost the gold at the last seconds and Olympic qualifier (Mark An­thony) Barriga in boxing who lost in the first round.”

Nilinaw ni Garcia na hindi nila sinisisi ang mga atleta da­hil sa pagbagsak ng bansa sa ikaanim na posisyon sa overall standings ng 2011 SEA Games.

Sina Garcia at Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco, Jr. ang siyang nag­hayag ng naturang gold medal projection bago ang 2011 SEA Games.

Hindi nagpaunlak ng maikling panayam si Cojuangco.

 Kabuuang 36 gold, 56 silver at 77 bronze medals ang nasikwat ng bansa sa naturang biennial event para ma­lagay sa No. 6 sa overall standings na pinagharian ng host Indonesia na may 182 gold, 151 silver at 142 bronze medals.

Nasa itaas ng bansa sa overall standings ang Thailand (107-100-120), Vietnam (96-90-100), Malaysia (59-50-81) at Singapore (42-45-73).

Hinirang na overall champion ang bansa sa 2005 SEA Games na idinaos sa Maynila, Bacolod at Cebu City.

Tatanggapin naman ni Garcia ang anumang imbes­tigasyon na posibleng gawin ng Senado at Kongreso.

“We are definitely willing and ready to face any investi­gation or committee to question the things we’ve done in the SEA Games,” ani Garcia.

Naging bisita rin kahapon ni Garcia si Chinese Minister of Sports Liu Peng.
