Tutukan din ang Olympics--Lopez

MANILA, Philippines - Bukod sa darating na 26th Southeast Asian Ga­mes sa Indonesia sa Nob­yembre, kailangan ring tu­tukan ng mga National Sports Associations (NSAs) ang Olympic Games sa London sa 2012.

Ito ang payo ni Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) first vice-president Manny T. Lopez sa pangu­lo ng mga NSAs na naghahangad na makapaglahok ng atleta para sa 2012 Lon­don Olympics.

“We should focus on the Olympics qualifying pro­cess because no Olympic dream will become a reality unless we hurdle the first step, which is the quali­fying system,” sabi kahapon ni Lopez.

Si Lopez, dating presidente ng Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) ang iniluklok ni POC chief Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco, Jr. bilang Chef De Mission ng Team Philip­pines sa 2012 Olympic Ga­mes.

Mula nang lumahok ang bansa sa Olympic Ga­mes noong 1928 ay wala pang gintong medalyang naiuuwi ang isang Filipino athlete.

Ang pinakamalapit ay ang silver medal ni light flyweight Mansueto ‘Onyok’ Velasco, Jr. noong 1996 sa Atlanta, Georgia matapos ang bronze medal ni featherweight Anthony Villanueva noong 1964 sa Tokyo, Japan.

Sa nakaraang Olympic Games sa Beijing, China noong 2008, kinatawan ang bansa nina swimmers Miguel Molina, Christel Simms, James Walsh, Da­niel Coakley at Ryan Arabejo, boxer Harry Tanamor, divers Shiela Mae Perez at Ryan Fabriga, archer Mark Javier, long jumpers Marestella Torres at Henry Dagmil, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, taekwondo jins Marie Antoinette Rivero at Tshomlee Go at shooter Eric Ang.
