Pinoy netters yukod sa Japan sa Davis Cup tie

LAPU LAPU CITY, Philippines -- Maaari na ngayong asamin ng Japan ang paglalaro sa World Group.

Tuluyan nang tinapos ng Japan ang kanilang Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group I tie ng Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine team sa 3-1 kahapon dtio sa Plantation Bay Resorts and Spa clay court.

Tinalo ni Go Soeda si RP No. 1 Cecil Mamiit, , 7-6(5), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, sa reverse singles para makasagupa ang Uzbekistan, winalis naman ang New Zealand, 4-0.

Ang mananalo sa pagitan ng Japan at Uzbekis­tan ang papasok sa World Group playoff .

"I really tried very hard to win this game because I know our countrymen wan­ted me to win," sabi ng RP playing team captain na si Mamiit.

"Although we lost, we showed them that we could compete against their level given the proper support and training. This is just the start and we will prove to them that we deserve to be in Group I," dagdag pa nito.

Nauna nang natalo ang 34-anyos na si Mamiit sa 22-anyos na si Tatsuma Ito, 4-6, 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-9, sa unang singles match noong Biyernes.

Yumukod naman si John­ny Arcilla, sa 24-anyos na si Go, 3-6, 3-6, 3-6.

Nakadikit sa 1-2 agwat ang Nationals nang igupo nina Mamiit at Huey sina Takao Suzuki at Hirko Kondo, 6-1, 7-6(5), 6-2, sa doubles event noong Sa­bado.
