Titulo iingatan na ni Viloria

MANILA, Philippines - Matapos makuha ang kanyang kauna-unahang world boxing crown noong 2005 at mahubad ito sa kanya makaraan ang walong buwan, alam na ni Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” kung gaano ito kahalaga para sa kanya.

“Now, I know how fragile it is to hold onto it. I know I need to work twice as hard to keep it every time I step into the ring and I know it’s twice as hard to beat every opponent,” ani Viloria sa panayam ng MaxBoxing.com. “So yeah, in a sense I look back on it and I didn’t appreciate it as much.”

Tinalo ni Viloria si Eric Ortiz via first-round KO noong Setyembre 10, 2005 para agawin ang World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight title ng Mexican kasunod ang pagkabigo kay Omar Nino Romero mula sa isang unanimous decision noong Agosto 10, 2006.

Sa nasabing laban, ipinag-utos ng WBC kay Romero na bakantehin ang light flyweight belt matapos bumagsak ang Mexican sa post fight drug test.

Binigo naman ni Mexican Edgar Sosa si Viloria sa kanilang agawan para sa bakanteng WBC light flyweight crown via majority decision noong Abril 14, 2007.

Mula rito ay unti-unting nagbago ng diskarte si Viloria, kasama na ang pag-angkin sa dating suot na International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight belt ni Mexican Ulises “Archie” Solis buhat sa isang 11th-round TKO noong Abril 19, 2009 sa Araneta Coliseum.

Sa Agosto 29, naka-takdang idepensa ng 28-anyos na si Viloria, ang ninuno ay mula sa Ilocos Sur, ang kanyang IBF light flyweight title laban sa isa ring Mexican na si Jesus “Azul” Iribe sa Blaisell Center sa Honolulu, Hawaii.

“I’ve seen his fights, he’s quick-handed. I think he likes to fight from the outside. I don’t think he likes to tangle it up in the middle,” wika ni Viloria, dating hinawakan ni trainer Freddie Roach.

Dinadala ni Viloria, miyembro ng Olympic team ng United States noong 2000, ang 25-2-0 win-loss-draw ring record kasama ang 15 KOs, habang ta-ngan naman ni Iribe ang 15-5 (9 KOs) card.

 Ito ang unang pagkakataon na lalaban si Viloria sa Hawaii matapos noong 2003 nang pabagsakin niya si Mexican Va-lentin Leon sa round 8 sa Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. (Russell Cadayona)
