Jones Cup 'crash course' ng Powerade-RP

TAIPEI – Para sa Po-werade Team Pilipinas, ang 31st Williams Jones Cup tournament ay isang crash course sa team bonding at isang preparasyon.

Kung ginagamit ng Lebanon at Iran ang 9-team competition na ito na idinadaos taun-taon bi-lang pag-alala sa founding secretary-general ng International Basketball Federation (FIBA) – para i-break ang mga bagong player o sukatan ng kanilang natutunan sa year-long training, sinisikap naman ng Philippines na matutunan sa loob ng 10-araw ang dapat matutunan sa loob ng 10-buwan.

 “Without prolonged preparation, we’re trying to compress all the situations na puwede nating daanan sa Tianjin in this one tournament,” ani national coach Yeng Guiao pagkatapos sayangin ng RP team ang 19-point second quarter lead sa pagkatalo sa Japan noong Martes.

 “We learn more from seeing the situation here,” dagdag ni Guiao.

Bukod sa low level Southeast Asian Basketball Men’s Championship sa Medan, Indonesia noong Mayo, ang Nationals, na may misyong makapasok sa 2010 World Championship sa Istanbul sa pamamagitan ng top three finish sa 25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship sa China sa susunod na buwan , wala nang ibang international experience ang team.

Nakalaban nila ang overmatched team mula sa Australia, dalawang PBA selections at isang grupo ng American missionaries, ngunit walang kaparis ang makaharap ang Lebanon, pasadsarin ng host Chinese-Taipei, at sirain ang loob ng Japan.

Ang panalo sa Kazakhstan, ang koponan hindi tinalo ng Pinas sapul noong 1998 ay malaking tulong sa team ayon kay Guiao.
