Chief trainer ni Ali pabor kay Dela Hoya

Mismong ang dating chief trainer ni boxing legend Muhammad Ali ang nagsabi na si Oscar Dela Hoya ang mananalo sa kanilang non-title welterweight fight ni Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

Ayon kay training great Angelo Dundee, inaasahan niyang dodominahin ng 35-anyos na si Dela Hoya, isang world six-division champion, ang kanilang laban ng 29-anyos na si Pacquiao na nakatakda sa Disyembre 6 sa MGM Grand Arena sa Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Can Manny win that fight? I don’t think so, I really don‘t,” wika ni Dundee. “I love Oscar to win that fight, I really do.”

Sa pamamagitan ni Dundee, isinilang noong Agosto 30, 1921 sa Philadelphia, 15 fighters ang naghari sa kani-kanilang mga weight divisions, tampok rito sina Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jose Napoles, George Foreman, Jimmy Ellis, Carmen Basilio at Luis Rodriguez.

Sinabi ni Dundee na hindi magkakaroon ng problema ang 5’s10 1/2 na si Dela Hoya kontra sa 5’6 na si Pacquiao.

“Oscar has fought and sparred with so many smaller guys,” wika ni Dundee sa 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games gold medalist na si Dela Hoya. “And Oscar has knocked them all over the ring.”

Si Dundee ang nasa corner ni Ali nang talunin ng world heavyweight champion ang mga katulad nina Foreman, Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton at Leon Spinks bago tinulungan si Leonard. 

Sa kanyang huling trabaho, kinuha si Dundee ni Australian actor Russel Crowe para gamayin ang personalidad ni James J. Braddock sa pelikulang “Cinderella Man” at nagkaroon ng cameo role sa pelikulang “Angelo”. (Russell Cadayona)
