15 Beijing Olympiad athletes pararangalan

Hindi mauuwi sa wala ang mga sakripisyong ginawa ng 15-man national team sa kabila ng malamyang kampanya sa katatapos na 29th Olympic Games sa Beijing, China.

 Inihayag kahapon ng Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman ang pagbibigay ng isang Thanksgiving Rites para kina national swimmers Miguel Molina, JB Walsh, Daniel Coakley, Ryan Arabejo, taekwondo jins Marie Antonette Rivero at Tshomlee Go, divers Sheila Mae Perez at Ryan Rexel Fabriga, boxer Harry Tañamor, archer Mark Javier, shooter Eric Ang, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz at long jumpers Marestella Torres at Henry Dagmil.

 “We will be having a thanksgiving activities for the 15 athletes on Thursday together with the other national athletes,” wika ni PSC chairman William “Butch” Ramirez sa okasyong nakatakda bukas ng alas-2 ng hapon sa PSC Badminton Hall.

 Ito ang ikatlong sunod na Olympic Games na nabigong makapag-uwi ng anumang medalya ang mga Filipino athletes matapos ang silver medal ni light flyweight Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Jr. noong 1996 sa Atlanta.

 Maliban sa mga swimmers na bumalik na sa United States, makakasama nina Perez, Fabriga, Tañamor, Rivero, Go, Javier, Ang, Diaz, Torres at Dagmil sa Thanksgiving Rites sina Velasco, Elma Muros-Posadas at PSC Commissioner Akiko Thomson.

 Kaugnay nito, bibigyan naman ng sports commission ng cash incentives sina wushu artists Willy Wang, Mary Jane Estimar, Benjie Rivera at Marianne Mariano.

 “The performance of wushu was really worth recognizing,” wika ni Ramirez kina Wang, nag-uwi ng gold medal sa taolu competition ng wushu, kinilalang isang special Olympics event at hindi kasama sa official medal tally, Estimar, Rivera at Mariano. “They will be given some incentive as a team pero si Willy Wang meron na as our lone gold medalist.”

 Insentibong P500,000 ang ibibigay ni Ramirez sa tropa ng wushu, habang nangako naman ng bonus si First Gentleman Atty. Mike Arroyo sa 24-anyos na si Wang. (Russell Cadayona)
