Buenavista, Unso nagdeliber ng ginto

Pinasigla ng isang double-gold medalist sa Southeast Asian Games at isang papasibol na junior hurdler ang matamlay na pagbubukas ng 2008 Milo National Open Invitational track and field championships kahapon sa Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Itinakbo ni Eduardo Buenavista, isang two-time Olympic Games campaigner, ng Philippine Army ang gintong medalya sa men’s 5,000-meter run sa tiyempong 14:43.16 para iwanan ang Armyman ring si Julius Sermona (14:48.91) at Junel Languido ng Nike (15:09.00).

Ang 30-anyos na si Buenavista ang kasalukuyang may hawak ng Philippine record sa men’s 5,000m run mula sa kanyang tiyempong 13:58.00.

Kagaya ni Buenavista, lumikha rin ng ingay ang 17-anyos na si Jose Renato Unso, anak ng dating national mainstay na si Renato Unso, ng TMS Ship Agencies matapos angkinin ang gintong medalya sa boys’ 110m hurdles.

Binura ni Unso, sumikwat ng apat na gold medal sa nakaraang 2008 Palarong Pambansa, ang isang 14-year record na 15.31 ni Alonzo Jardin noong 1994 Manila-Fujian Games para sa bagong oras na 15.25.

Tinalo ni Unso sina John Rey Vicente ng DLSU-CSB at Dharl Pitogo ng Team Cebu buhat sa kanilang 15.54 at 15.63 oras, ayon sa pagkakasunod.

Ang iba pang kumuha ng gold medal sa nasabing three-day trackfest ay sina Mercedita Manipol sa women’s 300m run (10:24.71), Princess Que sa women’s high jump (1.50), Luville Datoon sa women’s long jump (5.49) ng TMS; Mike Mendoza ng Ateneo sa men’s 110m (15.45), Jessa Aguilar ng Occidental Mindoro sa girls’ 3,000m run (11:17.31), Hanna Erika Sia ng University of Baguio sa women’s discuss throw (34.40) at Christopher Ulboc ng FEU sa boys’ 5,000m run (15:40.09),       

Si Senate President Manny Villar ang naging guest speaker sa pagbubukas ng naturang track meet.

“Some says sports is low profile but still it brings pride every time an athlete or player wins abroad like what Manny Pacquiao has proven in the past.  We should like sports as an opportunity rather than a problem,” ani Villar. (Russell Cadayona)
