Binawas na bronze kapalit ay gold

Kung may nabawas, mayroon namang nadagdag.

Inihayag kahapon ng isang Thai chief medical officer ang pagkakabawi kay Filipina heptathlete Narcisa Atienza ng bronze medal nito mula sa 24th Southeast Asian Games sa Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand mula sa paggamit ng banned substance.

Ang pagbawi sa bronze medal ni Atienza ang nagpalugmok pa sa nakuhang 5 gold, 7 silver at 9 bronze medals ng Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) sa 2007 Thailand SEA Games.

 Maliban kay Atienza, ang iba pang binawian ng medalya ng SEA Games Federation ay sina Thai boxer Suriya Prasathinpimai (gold), Thai volleyball player Supachai Jitchamroon (bronze), Malaysian polo player Dato Mohamed Moiz (gold) at Vietnamese female boxer na si Dihn Thi Phuong Thanh (bronze). 

 Si Suriya, sumuntok ng bronze medal sa 2004 Olympic Games sa Athens, Greece, ang tumalo naman kay Filipino middleweight Junie Tizon sa kontrobersyal na final round ng boxing event ng 2007 SEA Games.

Nangangahulugang mapupunta na kay Tizon ang gold medal ni Suriya.

“They are stripped of their medals,” wika ni Charoen Wattanasin, kinatawan ng Thailand sa SEA Games Federation. “But how long they will be banned depends on each international sports federation.”

Pormal na inilatag ni Dr. Varin Tansupasiri, chief medical officer ng 2007 Thailand SEA Games, ang naturang resulta sa pulong ng SEA Games Federation sa Laos, ang tatayong host ng 2009 SEA Games.

 Tinapos ng Team Philippines, ang 2005 overall champion, ang kampanya sa 2007 SEA Games bilang sixth placer mula sa nakolektang 34 gold, 54 silver at 80 bronze medals sa ilalim ng Thailand (121-103-86), Vietnam (59-43-62), Malaysia (45-38-73), Indonesia (38-47-66) at Singapore (38-33-32). (Russell Cadayona)
