National Open Chess Tourney susulong ngayon

Magsisimula na ngayon ang tagisan ng talino ng mahigit sa 400 wood-pushers sa pagbubukas ng National Open Chess championships sa Greenhills Shopping Centermall sa San Juan.

Inaasahang mapapasabak sa pigaan ng utak ang mahuhusay na chessers ng bansa sa pangunguna nina Grandmasters Eugene Torre, Joey Antonio at defending champion Bong Villamayor sa dalawang ling-gong events na ito na inorganisa ng National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Inaanyayahan ang ilang matataas na sports official upang dumalo sa isang simpleng seremonyas sa ala-una ng hapon.

Mangunguna sa lista-han ng panauhin sina Maite Defensor, kinatawan ng kanyang ama at NCFP project director Mat Defensor na siyang pangunahing tagapagsalita.

Inimbitahan din sina Philippine Olympic Committee president Celso Dayrit, POC second vice president Claudio Altura, Commissioner William Ramirez ng PSC, Philippine Chess Society Vice Chairman Horace Templo at Ortigas and Company Chess Club Chairman Eulogio Rodriguez.

Aabot sa kabuuang P750,000 ang nakataya sa men’s at women’s competitions ng tournament na ito na siya ring magiging qualifying event para sa Philippine team na lalahok naman sa Asian Zonals sa Manila sa Abril 23.

Tatanggap ang men’s champion ng P120,000 at ang women’s titlist ay P50,000.

Makakasama nina Torre, Antonio at Villamayor ang top nine placers sa men’s elimination sa finals ng 11-round Swiss system tournament na ito.

Ang top eight women’s finishers ay uusad naman sa susunod na round kung saan seeded na sina International Master Beverly Mendoza at FIDE Master at dating child prodigy Arianne Caoili. At ang finals ng dalawang division ay isang round-robin series na 11-rounds.
