MANILA, Philippines - As part of the community engagement of DLSU’s Manufacturing Engineering and Management (MEM) and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a group of students designed and developed seven transforming beds for Hospicio de San Jose in Quiapo, Manila.
The beds maximize the limited space in the 145-year old orphanage, which houses children and elderly as well as persons with special needs.
Students Cris Villanueva, Kean Peralta, Dominic Caoile, Rex Ong, and Julius Doolittle developed the beds under the supervision of faculty member Siegfried Lopez. Supporting the students were the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission under Br. Michael Broughton FSC and the Office of the associate vice president for Facilities Management under Engineer Ronaldo Gallardo.
The donation was the second set made by the MEM Department for Hospicio De San Jose. The first set of four space-saving beds was turned over to the orphanage in 2012.
