Globe donates old tarpaulins, unused uniforms to turn into shopping bags

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom donated 2,000 old tarpaulins and about 2,000 unclaimed employee uniforms to a women cooperative in Mandaluyong City for conversion into shopping bags and bag linings which are to be sold commercially.

Pamana Pag-asa is a 15-member community enterprise founded in 2008 which transforms recycled tarpaulins, canvas, nylon, katya and other materials into useful items. Pamana Pag-asa was also a recipient of the Globe Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom) livelihood grant which helps sustain and expand the enterprises of community beneficiaries so that they can ultimately achieve economic self sufficiency.

With the donation, the company’s old tarpaulins and unclaimed uniforms will no longer go to waste but will instead be used to help Pamana Pag-asa members to augment their earnings and at the same time, contribute to solid waste management efforts of Globe.

Globe BridgeCom encourages community enterprises to use renewable, sustainable and organic materials and apply environmentally responsible practices in production.

“This way, we can continue to act as the change agent for society as well as create sustainable solutions to change the lives of the Filipinos,” said Jeffrey Tarayao, head of Globe CSR.
