Remolona named among world’s best central bankers

For 3rd Straight Year

MANILA, Philippines — Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona Jr. received an A- grade from Global Finance for the third consecutive year, keeping him among the magazine’s highest-rated central bank chiefs worldwide.

Remolona was among 15 central bank governors who received an A- in Global Finance’s 2026 Central Banker Report Cards. Eight others received an A while only two, Denmark’s Christian Kettel Thomsen and Peru’s Julio Velarde Flores, earned the highest A+ grade.

The Central Banker Report Cards are Global Finance’s annual assessment of how central bank chiefs perform in areas such as inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability, interest rate management and political independence. The grades range from A+ for the strongest performance to F for outright failure.

“What wonderful recognition! So grateful to Global Finance and to Team BSP! This will inspire us to work even harder to serve the Filipino people,” Remolona said in a statement.

Remolona also received an A- grade in both 2024 and 2025. His first assessment in 2023 was marked “too early to say” as he had only recently taken over the BSP.

In its 2025 assessment, Global Finance cited the BSP’s monetary policy easing as inflation declined, as well as Remolona’s communication with investors and market participants. At the time, the magazine noted that lower inflation had given the central bank room to reduce borrowing costs.

For this year’s ranking, Remolona joined Cambodia’s Chea Serey and Taiwan’s Yang Chin-long among Asia-Pacific central bankers with an A- grade. India’s Sanjay Malhotra and Singapore’s Chia Der Jiun received A grades.

Global Finance founder and editorial director Joseph Giarraputo said top-rated central bankers had shown “the discipline, independence and sound judgment needed to deliver stability” amid persistent inflation pressures, uncertain growth and rapidly changing economic conditions.

Global Finance has published the Central Banker Report Cards annually since 1994, covering nearly 100 countries, territories and districts as well as several regional central banks. The complete 2026 grade list will be published in the magazine’s October print and digital editions.
