COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Another batch of 14 former members of the terrorist group Dawlah Islamiya surrendered to government forces in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur over the weekend.

The surrenderees turned over firearms and improvised explosive devices to the Army’s 38th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Buayan.

Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir Cagara, chief of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said the surrenderees availed themselves of the government’s reconciliation program for violent extremists.

Four of the surrenderees are bomb experts, Cagara said.

The military and the local government as well as the Department of Social Welfare and Development facilitated the reintroduction to communities of more than 2,000 extremists who surrendered in the past seven years.

All are now living as workers, vendors, drivers, construction workers and watchmen in their respective communities.
