The Aura that is SM

Our Webster dictionary defines “aura” as a subtle sensory stimulus, ambiance, a luminous radiation. Radium is an intensely brilliant element. These two words are reportedly the inspiration behind naming the new jewel in the Sy empire of malls that include supermarkets.

“Au” is derived from a Greek word that means gold, and gold it is that is likely to emanate from the new Aura SM as it attracts throngs of shoppers to Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

From the C-5 road the structure looked more like a luxury cruise ship, and we had been wondering what it was going to be sometime ago as we would pass the highway. Today it has opened its doors and it is a marvel in design and architecture, indeed radiating the brilliance of gold. It is now a landmark. It is dubbed as the Urban Market as it has been patterned after those in the US.

The supermarket, always  being our prime destination, was where we headed as we entered by driving through to the parking area to the basement level.

We were lucky we had the SM ladies, Frances and Eva, who patiently acted as our solicitous guides through the massive selling area. Thanks, ladies.

The first encounter was in the French bakery, Chateau de France, where a young French gentleman Leo was on hand to introduce the breads, pastries and cheeses it carries, all imported from France. We found mascarpone, which we use when cooking our own version of moussaka. It sells at P290 for a tub of 290 gms. They have parma ham as well as macarons, tartlettes, quiches and mini croissants, among others, at prices that range from P25 to P75 each. Leo will even be willing to  whip up a sandwich if a customer so desires.

Fronting the bakery is a trio of shiny aluminum food bars, selling ready-to-eat or take home salads and soups.

Then, on to the inner area where one chooses which “world” he/she wants to explore. Too early for Christmas, but there is Butterball turkey, Angus beef – with choices of strip loin, short ribs, and tenderloin, plus ostrich meat. Other meat selections look fresh as they are encased in sneeze glass panels for better hygiene, thus are not exposed to bacteria. Fish and seafood selections are extensive, with competitive prices.

We were delighted to find various types of mushrooms including portobello, ideal for roasting. Oyster mushrooms are what we use when cooking sukiyaki. In the vegetable section, which includes the organic selection, there is this Ozonizer, a sanitation tank with running water into which one can dip green leafy vegetables to keep them fresh.

Local food products are available to fill the continuing craving for the  Filipino taste.

SM Aura is aiming to be the new affordable luxury store. Doubtless it will be.
