Artist Iya Consorio recently held her Floating Black, Dirty Water exhibit at Vinyl on Vinyl Gallery in Makati City.

For her latest exhibit, Iya, known for her signature ominous quirk and bizarre drawings, drew the connection between “I and them” with a face.

I remember when I bought my very first Iya sketch, I already fell in love with the intricacy of her work. These intricate details and bold, glassy-eyed faces are still present in her paintings. Despite the shadowy tones of her art, Iya believes that “we are not alone and that in camaraderie we stay afloat, with heads above the black, dirty water of the broken world we are in.”

The very first Iya painting that I bought was of a little girl with eight octopus tentacles. Iya also released her designer toy of the same girl with tentacles in the painting. It is interesting that some of her paintings for Floating Black, Dirty Water also had that octopus tentacle, a recurring subject that has become one of her signatures.

Pieces were sold before the show and the last two available pieces were sold during the well-attended opening night.

Spotted at the opening of the exhibit were Iya’s husband and also a talented artist Andres Barrioquinto, Denise Miñana, Amado Fores, artist Angelo Quintos, Metro Gallery’s Chitty Cometa, Pia Hamoy and Bibot Nolan.

The exhibit was a joint project between  DF Art Agency of Derek Flores and Vinyl on Vinyl Gallery. The exhibit was curated by Ricky Francisco.

Gaby dela Merced, Iya Consorio and Anjie Ty-Dy Buncio.
