Think and care for our nation

The Philippine Star

We Filipinos are oftentimes guilty of being complacent, even apathetic to what is happening around us.  If we feel we are not affected by social and political issues, we don’t mind.  We go on with our lives and normal routines – we eat, shop, sleep and drink, go on vacations.  But these normal existence can suddenly change, if something untoward happens, and it has happened in Tacloban, where rich and poor experienced the same suffering and devastation, and many had better understanding of what it is like to suffer and lose everything in just an instant.

We desire change, abhor corruption, want peace, but we just sit and watch what is happening.  We have the “no care” attitude at times.  We lack involvement and participation in the affairs of our nation.  We should give our 2-cents’ worth, as they say.  We could do this by giving our views and opinions on important issue of national interest, and let our voices be heard.  A good word or a condemnation will make a difference to show others that Filipinos “think” and “care.”  Some of us have joined indignation rallies against corruption, but after that nothing follows.  We tend to forget we have a role to play in society.

We can start by recognizing the efforts of our government in peace, insurgency, economic recovery, thank our soldiers and police for the good job that they are doing, thank our teachers and educators, environmentalists, philanthropists, our doctors, engineers and all others involved in making our country livable, peaceful and stable.  Our words would matter the most.  Show we care for our nation. — Candy S.
