Phl for Filipinos
We just would like to impart our sentiments regarding one of your news items last July 12, which tells about lawmakers who want to convene a constitutional convention to propose constitutional amendments.
The Rodriguez brothers’ proposal sounds insidious due to the fact that shifting our government to federal-parliamentary, conversion of Congress into a one-chamber parliament, and the abolition of the term limits for lawmakers and other local officials are new to use and it would surely take time in adopting these things for we are not used to do so. Indeed, we are contented on the type of government that the Philippines has now.
We also do not agree to one of your readers’ comment. The proposal states that in the new type of government, foreign ownership restrictions in the exploration and use of natural resources, in public utilities, educational institutions, mass media, advertising, and other investment areas be lifted. Our country is a country meant for its citizens — the Filipinos — and not for foreign nationals. We are indeed degrading our Filipino values, customs and culture by basing them on other nations’ perspectives and views. — REYAN CANOY and ARNEL TRAVERO, Cagayan de Oro City
